Discover 10 Amazing Experiences in Incredible India - By Sian Warren

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm excited to introduce this guest blog by Sian, the founder of South Asia Uncovered and an India travel expert with whom I share a personal connection. Sian has been bringing her travel groups to my parents' homestay in New Delhi for the past few years, and we’ve recently connected in person after following and supporting each other on Instagram. Her passion for India’s rich culture and stunning landscapes is evident in every journey she curates. In this blog, she shares her top 10 experiences in India, offering a perfect guide to the country’s unforgettable adventures. As the India travel season kicks off this October, I’m thrilled to share her recommendations, including a special mention of my parents' homestay, which holds a meaningful place in both our journeys.

India, a land of vibrant cultures, ancient traditions, and breathtaking landscapes, offers an endless array of remarkable experiences for travellers. From the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the palm fringed backwaters of Kerala, every corner of the country reveals a new facet of its rich heritage and stunning natural beauty.

With so much to explore, it can be overwhelming to choose where to begin. My list of the top 10 experiences provides just a snapshot of the unforgettable adventures India has to offer—whether you're seeking spiritual enlightenment, historical wonders, or community engagement. These highlights are just the start, with countless more treasures waiting to be explored.

1. Celebrate a festival - Celebrating a festival in India as a visitor is an unforgettable experience, immersing you in the country’s vibrant and deep-rooted traditions, and infectious joy. Festivals in India are often full of energy, colour, and community, where locals warmly welcome outsiders to join the celebrations. One of the most iconic is Holi, the festival of colours, which celebrates the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. As a visitor, you’ll find yourself swept up in the joyful chaos—people gather in streets and open spaces, throwing coloured powders, splashing water, and dancing to rhythmic music. It’s a playful, lively celebration of unity and joy, with strangers becoming friends as they paint each other in vivid hues.

2. Shop for handmade goods from artisans - Buying handmade goods directly from artisans in India offers a personal glimpse into the country’s rich craft traditions. In Bhujodi, Gujarat, you can choose intricate handwoven shawls while learning about the weavers’ time-honored techniques. Jaipur’s artisans mold vibrant lac bangles before your eyes, creating colourful, unique jewellery. In Pondicherry, eco-friendly handmade paper showcases a centuries-old craft. Each purchase is more than a souvenir—it's a connection to India’s artistic heritage and a way to support local artisans.

3. Witness the Ganga aarti in Varanasi - Watching the Ganga Aarti ceremony in Varanasi is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that captures the spiritual essence of India. Held on the sacred ghats of the Ganges River at sunset, this mesmerising ritual is a powerful blend of devotion, tradition, and spectacle. As you stand among pilgrims and visitors, you’ll witness priests dressed in saffron robes perform synchronised movements, offering fire, incense, and flowers to Mother Ganga. The air is filled with the sound of chanting, ringing bells, and the gentle flow of the river, creating an awe-inspiring atmosphere. The flickering flames of the aarti lamps, mirrored in the dark waters of the Ganges, evoke a sense of transcendence, making you feel deeply connected to the spiritual heartbeat of India.

4. Stay in a family owned hotel - Staying in homestays and independently owned accommodation in India offers a more intimate cultural experience, allowing visitors to connect with local traditions and hospitality. Places like Colonel’s Retreat in Delhi, a warm and homely guesthouse, provide a welcoming environment for first-time visitors. With personalised service, home-cooked meals, and the chance to engage with local hosts, these stays offer a deeper insight into Indian life, far beyond what larger hotels can provide.

5. Ride the rails - India's iconic railways offer an unforgettable travel experience, making a ride on the rails a must for any visitor. The vast rail network is not only a practical way to explore the country but also a window into India's diverse cultures, landscapes, and everyday life. Among the many journeys to try, riding a Mumbai commuter train stands out as an exhilarating adventure. With its open doors and a breeze flowing through the carriage, this fast-paced trip gives a unique glimpse into the city’s bustling energy. It’s a fun, authentic way to immerse yourself in local life, making India’s railways a key part of any itinerary.

6. Eat a thali - Eating a traditional Indian thali is a truly authentic culinary experience, offering a delicious way to explore the country's diverse flavors. A thali is a platter filled with a variety of regional dishes, allowing you to savor a complete meal that balances spicy, sweet, and tangy flavors. Found across India, thalis range from simple to lavish, featuring everything from curries and dals to breads, rice, and desserts. One standout experience is at Agashiye restaurant in Ahmedabad’s House of MG, where under the moonlit sky, staff continuously fill your plate with an array of Gujarat's finest dishes, making it a memorable feast that captures the richness of Indian hospitality and cuisine.

7. Go on safari - Going on safari in India is an exciting experience, offering the chance to explore the country’s diverse wildlife beyond just the iconic tiger. While spotting a tiger is the ultimate highlight, India’s national parks are also home to many other fascinating species, including the elusive leopard, the shy sloth bear, Asiatic lions and the majestic one-horned rhinos of Kaziranga. Each safari promises unique wildlife encounters, showcasing a rich biodiversity not found anywhere else.

8. Attend the night ceremony at the Meenakshi Temple - Attending the nightly "Going to Bed" ceremony at Madurai's Meenakshi Temple is a unique and spiritual experience often missed on typical India itinerary. As the deities Shiva and Meenakshi are symbolically put to rest, a lively procession of chanting priests, drumming, and worshippers fill the temple’s sacred halls. The vibrant energy, coupled with the deep sense of tradition, creates an atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression, offering a unique glimpse into the rich rituals of southern India. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after you leave.

9. Be mesmerised by the Great Rann of Kutch - Visiting the Great Rann of Kutch is like entering a surreal, otherworldly landscape, where vast stretches of white salt desert shimmer under the sun. For a more authentic and serene experience, it’s best to plan your visit outside of the bustling Rann Utsav festival, which often takes over the area for several months of the year. Without the crowds, you can truly appreciate the stark, captivating beauty of this unique landscape and connect more deeply with this natural wonder.

10. Explore the backwaters of Kerala - Visiting the backwaters of Kerala is a serene and must-do experience, where lush greenery and tranquil waters create a breathtaking and calming landscape. While cruising on a traditional houseboat is a popular highlight, taking the time to explore the smaller waterways by country boat or canoe offers a more intimate connection to the region's natural beauty and local culture. Gliding silently through narrow canals lined with palm trees and charming villages, you can observe daily life unfold—fishermen casting nets, women washing clothes, and children playing along the banks.
